A septoplasty procedure is performed to correct and repair a septum that is deviated or crooked. Once corrected, patients will be able to breathe more easily and eliminate snoring, as well as other complications. At our San Francisco practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony provides septoplasty procedures for his patients that have been diagnosed with a deviated septum that is obstructing their airway. There are many different factors that can cause a deviated septum including genetics, trauma or injury, or a birth defect. In some cases, a septoplasty is performed in conjunction with turbinate reduction surgery, which affects proper nasal air flow. A septoplasty can also be performed in combination with a rhinoplasty surgery to correct cosmetic nasal issues. Dr. Anthony treats the nose to restore both full functionality and create an aesthetically appealing facial feature. If you have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are experiencing unpleasant symptoms, contact our San Francisco facility today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Anthony.
"Dr Anthony was recommended to me, and I've had more than one procedure at his clinic. At my initial consultation I felt at ease to ask a myriad of questions. He has a warm style, listens and works to understand each individual body and situation. His work is a skilled blend of art and science, and he recommends what is best for the patient, not what is trending. Each time I've been impressed with Dr Anthony's ability to minimize scars and hide them well. In preparation for surgery, what to expect on the day is explained in detail. I'm delighted with my results which look natural and have stood the test of time well. Dr Anthony's team is excellent - Ann, Jasmine and Megan are personal and caring."- M.B. / Yelp / Apr 19, 2019
"I see Dr Anthony a couple times of year for botox on my forehead and worry lines. I do not like the lines on my forehead but I also don't want to look like I have had botox or a frozen look on my forehead. Dr. Anthony achieves the perfect balance for me by decreasing the severity of my wrinkles but not completely eliminating them for a more natural look. We started by doing some "baby botox" and have increased my amount over the last year and half. I had experience with other doctors before I started seeing Dr. Anthony and he is my favorite.I trust him and would highly recommend him, especially if you are new to botox injections."- K.D. / Yelp / Nov 05, 2019
"The best! Dr. Anthony is a stellar physician and surgeon. His approach to technique and art is truly amazing. His attention to detail(s), bedside manner and follow up is superb. His office team is attentive, smart and always available! Ann and Jazmine consistently and effectively manage your appointments, skin care, recovery and overall experience. The "team" assist you from end to end. You feel as if you are the only patient. I recently, had two procedures with Dr. Anthony. Breast reduction/lift and neck lift! His team and anesthesiologist are unmatched in the outpatient world. Their attention to YOU, procedure and policy truly put you in the best care possible as you elect surgery. There are many choices in the plastic surgery world, but know, when you have the very best surgeon and team with you and always available you are ahead of the game!"- D.P. / Yelp / Oct 29, 2019
"I highly recommend Dr. James Anthony without reservation. I went to him about a year ago to address an aging neck because a physician friend of mine said he was the best. Though I had several consultations with other surgeons, none of them compared with his clear vision, his confident approach, his genuine warmth and his focused attention. Impressively, he didn't push any other procedures along with lifting the neck, saying repeatedly that he wouldn't recommend anything else be done to me (despite my not being young), whereas other surgeons pressed for additional work like face lifts or fat grafting -- things those close to me felt were unnecessary. Dr. Anthony is both a highly skilled surgeon and a life-long artist, so he understands how to preserve a natural look. He was brilliant throughout the entire process, and I and my family couldn't be more thrilled with both that process and the beautiful, natural result which has taken years off me. He is also an extremely responsive physician who provided multiple consults before surgery as questions arose, as well as regular check-ups for a year after surgery, and is un-hurried and attentive in exams. Recovery was much easier than I imagined, and his nursing staff (his surgical center adjoins his office) was wonderful -- he can send a skilled night nurse home with you. There were absolutely no complications, everything healed perfectly and much sooner than I thought, and there are no visible scars whatsoever, no puckering, no problems. This is a wonderful and highly skilled surgeon and a complete pleasure to interact with from beginning to end."- L.B. / Yelp / May 30, 2019
"I was referred by another plastic surgeon and it turned out to be the best referral. Dr. Anthony replaced my saline implants and made a small adjustment so my breasts are more symmetrical. The whole experience from the first consultation, to the pre-op, to the actual surgery, to post op was so easy and comfortable. It was a harmonious effort of professionals that took care of me throughout the process. Dr. Anthony and his staff were very responsive. Most importantly, I am very happy with the results and as a runner my downtime didn't take much. I was able to ease into running the 2nd week after surgery. Thank you so much, Dr. Anthony!!"- Anonymous / Healthgrades / May 02, 2019
Ideal candidates for a septoplasty surgery will have been diagnosed with a deviated or crooked septum, which could have been caused by one of many factors. In most cases, candidates will have begun to experience unpleasant symptoms including breathing issues, snoring, frequent nosebleeds, or loss of smell. They may also be desiring a more natural look to their nose as a deviated septum can sometimes cause the nose to appear crooked from an outside view that can be corrected with a combined septoplasty and rhinoplasty. A septoplasty can provide a long-term solution to the many problems caused by an abnormal septum allowing for improved functionality.
Typically an outpatient procedure, a septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or a lighter form of sedation such as twilight sedation. No external incisions are needed as Dr. Anthony will lift and separate the tissue that covers the septum. He will be able to view the nasal structures as he reshapes the damaged structures. The entire surgical process can last anywhere from 1 – 2 hours to complete; however, this may vary if the septoplasty was combined with another procedure. After the structures are reshaped, the internal incisions will be stitched closed.
What to Expect
Following a septoplasty procedure, you may experience some slight pain, discomfort, swelling, and/or bruising. Typically, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities within a week but should avoid contact sports or activities that require extensive exercise. You will begin to experience improved breathing once the swelling subsides and results will continue to improve within the weeks and months following your procedure.
frequently asked questions
How much does a septoplasty procedure cost?
The price of a septoplasty procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of damage that needs correction. In some cases, a septoplasty may be eligible to be covered, at least in part, by insurance. Our practice also offers medical financing and payment plans to help make your procedure more affordable.
What is the difference between a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty?
A septoplasty by itself will not alter the outer appearance of the nose or fix the look of a crooked nose. It is purely a functional procedure to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of a deviated or crooked septum. However, a rhinoplasty is exclusively a cosmetic procedure that can be performed in conjunction with a septoplasty to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the nose for straighter, more desirable results.
Why choose a plastic surgeon rather than an ENT to perform a septoplasty?
A plastic surgeon with distinct nose surgery experience will understand the importance of both function and aesthetics to provide you with your desired results. While an ENT only focuses on the functionality of the nose through septoplasty, plastic surgeons are specially trained to enhance the look and shape of the nose and alter it according to your goals — with the addition of rhinoplasty techniques. If you are wanting to simultaneously restore the appearance of your nose, a plastic surgeon will be able to use their artistic skills to reshape and change the facial feature.
Does should I seek surgical treatment for a deviated septum?
When the septum is severely deviated or crooked, it can cause sinusitis and breathing problems. If left untreated, the problems will not rectify themselves and will continue to be persistent. If a deviated septum is blocking one or both nostrils, you may want to consider seeking surgical treatment.
How long does it take to recover from a septoplasty?
Recovery times may vary from patient to patient. For example, if a rhinoplasty was done in combination with a septoplasty, the healing process will take longer. In most cases, it takes up to three weeks to fully recover from the surgery, but ideal results may take longer to be seen completely.
