A septoplasty procedure is performed to correct and repair a septum that is deviated or crooked. Once corrected, patients will be able to breathe more easily and eliminate snoring, as well as other complications. At our San Francisco practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony provides septoplasty procedures for his patients that have been diagnosed with a deviated septum that is obstructing their airway. There are many different factors that can cause a deviated septum including genetics, trauma or injury, or a birth defect. In some cases, a septoplasty is performed in conjunction with turbinate reduction surgery, which affects proper nasal air flow. A septoplasty can also be performed in combination with a rhinoplasty surgery to correct cosmetic nasal issues. Dr. Anthony treats the nose to restore both full functionality and create an aesthetically appealing facial feature. If you have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are experiencing unpleasant symptoms, contact our San Francisco facility today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Anthony.
"Dr Anthony was recommended to me, and I've had more than one procedure at his clinic. At my initial consultation I felt at ease to ask a myriad of questions. He has a warm style, listens and works to understand each individual body and situation. His work is a skilled blend of art and science, and he recommends what is best for the patient, not what is trending. Each time I've been impressed with Dr Anthony's ability to minimize scars and hide them well. In preparation for surgery, what to expect on the day is explained in detail. I'm delighted with my results which look natural and have stood the test of time well. Dr Anthony's team is excellent - Ann, Jasmine and Megan are personal and caring."- M.B. / Yelp / Apr 19, 2019
"I would give 10 stars if I could. I have worked as a nurse in the aesthetics field for 15 years. I turned 60 in 2019 and decided to treat myself to a mini facelift and a minor nose tip revision. I was very, very lucky to be referred to Dr. James Anthony!! Although precise surgical expertise is important to me, Dr. Anthony had me at HELLO:) with his personality. He is kind, compassionate, excellent eye contact and listens to my concerns. My results are completely natural, even my friends, family, colleagues and even my own patients' say I look fresher but can't figure out what I have had done. Dr. Anthony suggested a couple of extra touches which made a huge difference to my neck bands. Thank you again for your highly experienced artistry! Yasmin at reception is always very pleasant and kind both in person and on the phone. Ann, Patient Coordinator, answers all my questions and listens to my needs. The OR staff is excellent! I had less than 1 week downtime over my Christmas holiday with minimal pain. Although, I now live in Los Angeles, I plan on returning to Dr. Anthony for an upper blepharoplasty procedure soon! Stay tuned for my before and after photos on Dr. James P. Anthony's Website."- C.C. / Yelp / Mar 03, 2020
"Dr. Anthony performed an upper and lower eyelid lift, nasolabial fold injections, neck thermage and abdominal liposuction for me (I figured as long as I was going to be under general anesthesia, I might as well get everything done at once). I am thrilled with the results. I was able to return to the office and start going out again within a week and a half of the surgery. Within two weeks, people started spontaneously telling me that I looked great -- so relaxed and well rested. It's been about five weeks since I had the procedures, and every day, I feel as if I look even better. Dr. Anthony strives to maintain a natural look -- no one would know I've had these procedures. In my initial consultation, he took his time explaining all of the options, potential risks, likely recovery time, and likely outcomes. After the consultation, he responded to my follow up questions by email, quickly and thoroughly. After the surgery, he checked in with me by phone and by email. His staff is excellent and also a great source of information about the procedures Dr. Anthony performs. I highly recommend him to anyone considering plastic surgery."- C.L. / Yelp / Feb 08, 2020
"Dr. Anthony is a highly skilled and very experienced surgeon. His work is impeccable and results exceed expectations. I have seen Dr. Anthony for a number of procedures including breast lift and augmentation, liposuction, upper eyelid lift and neck lift. I've always been thrilled with my results and surprised at how quickly I heal with minimal discomfort and zero complications. The results are completely natural. Even people who have known me for 20 years have not noticed that I had my eyes done and a neck lift! The only comments people make are "you look great" or ask if I lost weight. Dr. Anthony is kind, patient and answers all questions and his staff is great - very helpful and friendly. I have 100% confidence in him."- C.H. / Yelp / Feb 01, 2020
"I recently had eye lid surgery with Dr. Anthony who had been highly recommended by a friend. Dr. Anthony did not disappoint! I was concerned about looking fake or changing the shape of my eyes but Dr. Anthony listened to my concerns and my eyes turned out perfect. What I love about Dr. Anthony is that he made me look younger but natural, I have seen the same result with my friends who have had procedures with Dr. Anthony. My procedure was painless, short and easy. The staff was friendly and professional and addressed all of my concerns. Dr. Anthony has a great bedside manner, is an excellent surgeon and I will go back for more procedures as needed. A+"- E.M. / Yelp / Dec 03, 2019
Ideal candidates for a septoplasty surgery will have been diagnosed with a deviated or crooked septum, which could have been caused by one of many factors. In most cases, candidates will have begun to experience unpleasant symptoms including breathing issues, snoring, frequent nosebleeds, or loss of smell. They may also be desiring a more natural look to their nose as a deviated septum can sometimes cause the nose to appear crooked from an outside view that can be corrected with a combined septoplasty and rhinoplasty. A septoplasty can provide a long-term solution to the many problems caused by an abnormal septum allowing for improved functionality.
Typically an outpatient procedure, a septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or a lighter form of sedation such as twilight sedation. No external incisions are needed as Dr. Anthony will lift and separate the tissue that covers the septum. He will be able to view the nasal structures as he reshapes the damaged structures. The entire surgical process can last anywhere from 1 – 2 hours to complete; however, this may vary if the septoplasty was combined with another procedure. After the structures are reshaped, the internal incisions will be stitched closed.
What to Expect
Following a septoplasty procedure, you may experience some slight pain, discomfort, swelling, and/or bruising. Typically, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities within a week but should avoid contact sports or activities that require extensive exercise. You will begin to experience improved breathing once the swelling subsides and results will continue to improve within the weeks and months following your procedure.
frequently asked questions
How much does a septoplasty procedure cost?
The price of a septoplasty procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of damage that needs correction. In some cases, a septoplasty may be eligible to be covered, at least in part, by insurance. Our practice also offers medical financing and payment plans to help make your procedure more affordable.
What is the difference between a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty?
A septoplasty by itself will not alter the outer appearance of the nose or fix the look of a crooked nose. It is purely a functional procedure to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of a deviated or crooked septum. However, a rhinoplasty is exclusively a cosmetic procedure that can be performed in conjunction with a septoplasty to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the nose for straighter, more desirable results.
Why choose a plastic surgeon rather than an ENT to perform a septoplasty?
A plastic surgeon with distinct nose surgery experience will understand the importance of both function and aesthetics to provide you with your desired results. While an ENT only focuses on the functionality of the nose through septoplasty, plastic surgeons are specially trained to enhance the look and shape of the nose and alter it according to your goals — with the addition of rhinoplasty techniques. If you are wanting to simultaneously restore the appearance of your nose, a plastic surgeon will be able to use their artistic skills to reshape and change the facial feature.
Does should I seek surgical treatment for a deviated septum?
When the septum is severely deviated or crooked, it can cause sinusitis and breathing problems. If left untreated, the problems will not rectify themselves and will continue to be persistent. If a deviated septum is blocking one or both nostrils, you may want to consider seeking surgical treatment.
How long does it take to recover from a septoplasty?
Recovery times may vary from patient to patient. For example, if a rhinoplasty was done in combination with a septoplasty, the healing process will take longer. In most cases, it takes up to three weeks to fully recover from the surgery, but ideal results may take longer to be seen completely.
