About Eyelid Surgery
A person's eyes are an appealing feature of the face that deserve to be visible, but sometimes an excess of skin around the eyes can produce a tired and unflattering facial appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony uses eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) to reduce excess skin and rejuvenate the lower or upper eyelid, creating a more "alert" look. Many men and women receive eyelid surgery at our practice to eliminate saggy eyelids, leading to improved functionality and facial appearance. Blepharoplasty, whether lower or upper, creates a more awakened appearance and can give you natural yet noticeable improvements. If you want to learn more about refreshing your eyes with eyelid lift surgery, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Anthony at his practice in San Francisco, CA.
Eyelid Lift Reviews
"Dr. Anthony is a highly skilled and very experienced surgeon. His work is impeccable and results exceed expectations. I have seen Dr. Anthony for a number of procedures including breast lift and augmentation, liposuction, upper eyelid lift and neck lift. I've always been thrilled with my results and surprised at how quickly I heal with minimal discomfort and zero complications. The results are completely natural. Even people who have known me for 20 years have not noticed that I had my eyes done and a neck lift! The only comments people make are "you look great" or ask if I lost weight. Dr. Anthony is kind, patient and answers all questions and his staff is great - very helpful and friendly. I have 100% confidence in him."- C.H. / Yelp / Feb 01, 2020
"Dr. Anthony performed an upper and lower eyelid lift, nasolabial fold injections, neck thermage and abdominal liposuction for me (I figured as long as I was going to be under general anesthesia, I might as well get everything done at once). I am thrilled with the results. I was able to return to the office and start going out again within a week and a half of the surgery. Within two weeks, people started spontaneously telling me that I looked great -- so relaxed and well rested. It's been about five weeks since I had the procedures, and every day, I feel as if I look even better. Dr. Anthony strives to maintain a natural look -- no one would know I've had these procedures. In my initial consultation, he took his time explaining all of the options, potential risks, likely recovery time, and likely outcomes. After the consultation, he responded to my follow up questions by email, quickly and thoroughly. After the surgery, he checked in with me by phone and by email. His staff is excellent and also a great source of information about the procedures Dr. Anthony performs. I highly recommend him to anyone considering plastic surgery."- C.L. / Yelp / Feb 08, 2020
Upper or lower blepharoplasty is a facial cosmetic enhancement that is performed on both women and men. At your first visit, treatment options will be explained by Dr. Anthony based on your areas of concern that need to be corrected. Generally, ideal candidates have excess, drooping skin and folds that exist on the top eyelid, or bloated skin just under the bottom eyelid. These irregularities can cause functional and vision difficulties that can get in the way of normal, everyday activities. For a more awake look, blepharoplasty may be the appropriate surgery for you. If you have hanging skin that folds over on the upper eyelid, or bulging bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty can treat this to provide you with a more youthful appearance.
Depending on the type and complex nature of the eyelid surgery, some form of anesthesia will be provided. This treatment may be done on the top eyelid by itself, under or on the bottom eyelid, or a blend of both eyelids.
Upper eyelid surgery assists in decreasing the folds of skin that impair vision to produce a more awakened and appealing look. The incision point is often placed along the lid crease to excise loose skin and fatty tissue.
Eyelid correction on the lower lid is performed to improve puffy and bulging skin beneath the lower lid. In most cases, an incision is carefully made along the lash line to surgically remove tissue and fat, and the skin is subtly lifted to allow for a softer, flatter look. Sometimes, a nonsurgical laser procedure may be incorporated to help with discoloration, while fillers can be used for more smoothness and softening if desired.
What to Expect
Bleph of the upper or lower eyelid can take up to two hours considering whether both eyes or one is treated. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan about a week to recover and rest at home. A cold compress can assist in reducing discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The outcomes from bleph surgery may last a decade or longer, but while they are long lasting, aging does not stop. To maintain your surgical outcomes, other nonsurgical cosmetic treatments at our San Francisco practice such as fillers, peels, and lasers can be added to create a youthful-looking appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does eyelid surgery cost?
Eyelid surgery costs can vary depending on whether you are having an upper eyelid lift, lower, or both. Once your treatment plan has been created during your consultation, Dr. Anthony can talk to you about estimated costs. To get natural-looking results that last a long time, it is better to focus on finding a skilled plastic surgeon who you trust, like Dr. Anthony, instead of trying to find the cheapest place. To make it easy for you to afford a great eyelid lift, we also accept many payment methods and we can help you find low-interest medical financing.
Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?
If excess skin is compromising your vision, your health insurance may pay for part of your eyelid lift. Please tell Dr. Anthony during your consultation if you may be using your insurance. Someone at our practice will help you get the needed information and paperwork for your insurance company to process your claim. In most cases, you will need a diagnosis from an optometrist or ophthalmologist explaining that an eyelid lift will improve your field of vision.
What are some other benefits of an eyelid lift?
Blepharoplasty not only helps to refresh your appearance, but also improves other aspects of your life. You may find your field of vision expanding when excess hanging skin from your upper eyelid is removed. It can also be much easier to apply eye makeup when your upper eyelid is smooth. Eliminating fine lines, "crepey" skin, puffy bags, and dark circles under the eyes can make your eyes look brighter and fuller without cosmetics.
Will an eyelid lift fix wrinkles and Crow's feet?
Crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles may be better treated with a facelift, brow lift, or a cheek lift as the results of the eyelid surgery are confined to the eyelids only. Eyelid surgery can also be combined with a nonsurgical procedure such as BOTOX, which combats wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler can also be effective because it adds volume to hollow areas for a softer, smoother appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Anthony will create your unique treatment plan based on your needs and goals.
What about nonsurgical treatments instead of eye surgery?
Nonsurgical skin tightening and injectable wrinkle treatments, like BOTOX, Juvéderm, or Restylane, can provide mild improvements to the eyelids. However, if you have moderate to severe sagging skin or want long-lasting results, an eyelid lift would be better than a nonsurgical treatment. Once you have talked to Dr. Anthony about your concerns and goals for your eyes, he can explain his recommendations for your nonsurgical or surgical treatment plan. He may also suggest combining both surgical and nonsurgical procedures for your best results.
If you find it difficult to see or apply makeup because of folds of skin on your upper eyelids, or you are frustrated by bulging bags underneath your eyes, then upper or lower blepharoplasty may be the answer for you. This enhancement can allow you to look and feel refreshed and youthful while offering a beautiful answer to your vision impairment concerns.
