Am I a Candidate?

Chin augmentation is a popular cosmetic option for men and women alike. If you’re feeling self-conscious as a result of the size and shape of your chin, or don’t care for the undefined profile it offers, you may want to consider a San Francisco chin augmentation. Dr. Anthony will use his careful and artistic approach to subtly improve the lower area of your face and neck. Candidates should have healthy skin laxity and set realistic expectations, given that chin surgery will ultimately change the shape and look of your lower face. Benefits of a Chin Augmentation

A chin lacking in the proper size and shape can create an unappealing profile, while an unnecessarily large one can create similar issues. Thankfully, there are a number of techniques that can be performed to properly sculpt your chin, making it the asset to your appearance it’s supposed to be.

The Chin Lift

A chin lift is one of the most common chin procedures. Designed to add a dramatic impact to a person’s facial profile, it involves the insertion of an implant to create a more prominent jawline.

Implants and Fillers

Implants, which come in various sizes and shapes, and non-invasive augmentations such as fillers or Kybella® can also help add contour.

Liposuction

Patients with isolated pockets of fat under the chin can enjoy a slimmer look through liposuction.

Genioplasty

Finally, genioplasty is an option for unnecessarily prominent chins. This reconstructive procedure allows Dr. Anthony to remove bone and cartilage for a more contoured chin and jaw that results in a properly balanced appearance.

Dr. Anthony’s Surgical Technique

Anesthesia is used for patients receiving a chin augmentation with an implant. An incision is carefully made just under your chin, where a “pocket” is created to keep the implant device in its proper place. This involves removing and shaving some of the bone and cartilage to create grooves that will hold the implant securely in position. The chin implant then is placed through the incision and positioned on top of the bone, directly below the lower lip.

In some cases, the incision is made inside the crease in the lower lip where it connects to the gumline, making scars less visible. Thin sutures are then used to connect and close the incisions, and your chin is wrapped with bandages. Patients with submental fat (pockets of fat under the chin) will undergo liposuction to remove and recontour the area. Anesthesia is also used for this process, and small incisions are made just under the chin so the excess fat can be gently and delicately removed.

FAQ

Will Augmentation Fix my Double Chin?

Surgical chin augmentation is meant to give you a stronger, sharper chin. To correct a double chin, it’s recommended that patients look into neck liposuction, which removes excess fat from the submental area (the upper neck below the jawline). Occasionally, neck liposuction can wind up improving the jawline and appearance without chin augmentation surgery. Dr. Anthony will go over your choices and his suggestions during your consultation.

Can I Combine Other Facial Surgeries with Chin Augmentation?

Chin implants are often paired with other facial procedures such as cheek implants or nose re-shaping. Dr. Anthony can work with you to help you choose the procedures that will best create a sense of symmetry and balance within your facial features. During your consultation, Dr. Anthony will utilize his years of experience with facial cosmetic surgery to work with you and develop a personalized treatment plan designed to bring you the results you want.

Are There Non-Surgical Procedures to Improve My Chin?

Kybella is a minimally invasive treatment that improves one’s appearance by correcting stubborn fat that can cause a double chin. It’s FDA-approved to eliminate fat in your upper neck (the submental area) through simple, in-office injections. Kybella can also be performed alongside chin surgery to deliver optimal results. Dr. Anthony will talk about all of your non-surgical options during your initial consultation.

What's the Difference Between Mentoplasty and Genioplasty?

Chin augmentation surgery (mentoplasty) is a procedure designed to build fullness in the chin. On the other hand, genioplasty is intended to rebuild the chin bone and, in most cases, decrease the overall size of the jawline. Based on the state of your chin and with consideration of your personal goals, you might be suited to both surgeries, or just one. Genioplasty, in addition to being a cosmetic procedure, can also be performed to improve medical concerns, like your dental bite. Dr. Anthony can help you choose whether to get a genioplasty, mentoplasty, or both.
