About Tubular Breasts
In some patients, normal breast development does not occur (congenital breast deformity) or the breast develops in an unusual shape (tubular breast or constricted breast deformity). This deformity may be on one side (creating asymmetry or differences between one breast and the other) or may be on both breasts. Fortunately, modern plastic surgical techniques can lift, augment, and reshape the breasts in order to restore a more natural shape and improve symmetry. These improvements to breast shape also help improve self-confidence for many patients. At our San Francisco practice, Dr. James Anthony provides procedures to correct tubular breasts and allow patients to receive their desired appearance. Contact our facility to learn more about the procedure or to schedule a consultation today.
Tubular Breasts Reviews
"I have had a couple services with Dr Anthony and I came back after years because I knew he is an expert, he does great work and he teaches. I am happy with his services and he is reasonably priced. Of course as with any surgery I run some risks but I've been a willing participant in my choices. Grateful for my choices today!"- E.R. / Yelp / Aug 25, 2015
Tubular breasts are not necessarily a health concern but more of an aesthetic concern. However, tubular breasts can cause some complications for women who are looking to breastfeed. Diagnosed based on appearance, tubular breasts typically have a gap of more than 1.5 inches between them. Additionally, they often lack symmetry in which one breast may be larger than the other or one or both nipples may appear to be collapsed or constricted. Tubular breasts may also lack a round appearance, instead appearing pointed, oval, or square shaped.
Typically, several breast cosmetic treatments may need to be done to correct the appearance of tubular breasts. In some cases, a tissue expander will need to be placed into the breast, followed by a breast implants to alter the shape and size of the breast. A mastopexy (nipple surgery) may also need to be completed to modify the nipples to match the new breast implants. The entire process may take multiple surgeries to complete depending on the extent of the current breasts and the desired results. During your consultation with Dr. Anthony, he will create a customized treatment plan for your specific wants and needs to achieve a successful outcome.
What to Expect
Like after any other cosmetic breast surgery, you may experience swelling, tenderness, and bruising after the operation. You will also be limited to how much physical activity you can perform. In most cases, patients need up to 12 weeks of recovery before they can return to exercise and some other normal daily activities, while swelling tends to subside within about a month. Follow-up appointments may be necessary so that Dr. Anthony can track your recovery process and ensure that you are healing properly.

What causes tubular breasts?
Tubular breasts do not become evident until the process of puberty. Typically, tubular breasts occur because of insufficient breast tissue. In other cases, the tissue that connects the areola to the breast is shaped abnormally, making the breast appear to be drooping.
Are there any other forms of treatment for tubular breasts?
Currently, the only form of treatment for tubular breasts and congenital breast deformity is cosmetic surgery. Since tubular breasts do not affect your health, they are only really treated through a surgical approach to alter the shape and size of the breasts. However, before undergoing a cosmetic breast procedure, you should always make sure that you are receiving care from a physician that is familiar with your condition. A traditional breast augmentation may not be sufficient to fully correct the appearance of tubular breasts.
How do I know if I have tubular breasts?
Tubular breasts are diagnosed based off of the appearance of the breasts. Typically, the breasts may appear droopy, have insufficient breast tissue making them appear very small, or the nipples may look abnormal. A plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Anthony at our San Francisco practice, will often be able to properly diagnose your condition.
