About Latisse

LATISSE is an FDA-approved prescription medicine that can help you achieve longer, darker, and fuller lashes. It has proven to be effective in treating individuals who experience thinning lashes caused by a condition known as hypotrichosis (a condition classified by having too few eyelashes). As a topical drug, LATISSE is applied directly to the base of the upper eyelashes via a small applicator. You can experience enhanced lash growth within about four months with consistent application. At our San Francisco practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony is proud to offer LATISSE to help his patients feel more confident in the appearance of their eyelashes. Contact our office today if you are interesting in learning more about LATISSE.

Ideal Candidates

An ideal candidate for LATISSE must be in good health, want to improve the appearance of their eyelashes, and have realistic expectations for their results. Hypotrichosis is a rare condition that can affect the growth of eyelashes in which an individual may seek a treatment such as LATISSE to help combat the symptoms. Individuals who are taking antibiotics, have severe allergies, have skin infections, or are nursing or pregnant may not be good candidates for LATISSE treatments.

Procedure Technique

Though LATISSE is easy to apply, a patient must follow all given instructions carefully. Prior to application, patients must make sure they have washed both their face and hands. The face should also be free of makeup and contact lenses should be removed. Contacts can be put back in 15 minutes after application. LATISSE should be applied evenly across the base of the upper eyelashes using the provided applicators. Applicators should be thrown away after each use in order to keep the medication sterile. Patients should note that LATISSE is not recommended to be used on the bottom lashes.

What to Expect

Full results should be achieved in about four months; however, most patients see an improvement in 3 – 4 weeks. Even if you are happy with the results before the four-month treatment is complete, it is encouraged to continue to stick to the full 16-week treatment to experience optimal results. It is possible that a patient may not obtain the same results on both sets of lashes.

FAQs

How much does LATISSE cost?
One LATISSE kit typically includes one bottle of the serum along with 30 pairs of applicators. The price of the kit can vary based on your physician and pharmacy. LATISSE is usually not covered by insurance for cosmetic purposes, but prior to prescribing it, a member of our team will discuss any out-of-pocket costs with you.

How does LATISSE work?
LATISSE is classified as a bimatoprost eye solution which is similar to a prostaglandin, a natural chemical found in the body. Prostaglandin is responsible for several functions such as controlling cell growth and regulating hormones. Physicians are not entirely sure how LATISSE works or why it is so effective, but some believe it has to do with the growth cycle of eyelashes. It has been observed that LATISSE is responsible for keeping lashes in the growth stage for longer and for helping to transition lashes from the inactive to the active growth phase. If a patient stops using LATISSE, lashes will gradually return to normal.

What is hypotrichosis?
When eyelashes are especially short, sparse, or appear to be missing, these could be signs of a medical condition known as hypotrichosis. This is when a person does not have an adequate amount of eyelashes. Patients with this condition should consult with a dermatologist to see if LATISSE is right for them.

What are the side effects of LATISSE?
The most common side effects are itchy or red eyes. Less common side effects can include a darkening or redness of the eyelid, eye dryness, or eye irritation. If a patient discontinues the use of LATISSE, eyelid darkening should be reversed in a few weeks up to a few months. In very rare cases, eye trauma could occur and medical attention should be sought out immediately.

How long do the results of LATISSE last?
The effects of LATISSE will typically last through a cycle of lash growth. Most often this is about 1 – 2 months. Maintenance applications of LATISSE may be needed to help preserve results.
