About ThermiRF

At birth, you have a full stock of the nutrients elastin and collagen that keeps your skin soft, smooth, resilient, and healthy. However, this stock of nutrients becomes depleted and the skin of your body and face decreases in resiliency, causing wrinkles, lines, and skin that sags. If you want to improve the firmness and general health of your skin without plastic surgery, look into nonsurgical skin tightening with ThermiRF by Dr. James Anthony at our San Francisco practice. With state-of-the-art equipment, ThermiRF encourages the production of elastin and collagen in the areas treated through delivering strong heating under the surface of the skin. During the assessment and consultation, plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony will be happy to perform ThermiRF nonsurgical skin tightening to his San Francisco, CA patients looking to firm the skin on their face and body without the recovery time and expense of a surgical lift procedure. Make an appointment with Dr. Anthony in San Francisco, CA to find out more information on ThermiRF nonsurgical skin tightening.

Ideal Candidates

Surgery for skin tightening, or "lifts" like a face or body lift, are still the best option to improve loose, sagging skin. However, ThermiRF nonsurgical skin tightening may be a good option if you don't want to have cosmetic surgery. ThermiRF procedures may be done on many areas of the body and face, such as the stomach, neck, thighs, and arms. The ideal patients for this treatment:

  • Are in good general health
  • Are near or at a stable, healthy weight
  • Have light or medium loose skin on the body or face
  • Have wrinkles or lines on the body or face
  • Want to enhance the appearance, health, and texture of their skin

Procedure Technique

To start the session, the skin to be treated will be sanitized to eliminate any oil and lotions. ThermiRF can be done either in office using local anesthesia, or as a minor procedure using sedation (“twilight”) if you prefer. Either way, the procedure takes an hour or two. During the procedure, the area to be worked on is numbed and the ThermiRF probe (which is the size of a small needle) is placed under the skin, heating it from below. Once the procedure is completed, band aids are placed on the injection sites and you can go home or to work. The laser energy stimulates the body to start producing elastin and collagen, which firms and tightens the skin. Once the session is complete, you'll be allowed to leave and get back to your daily routine.

What to Expect

Following your skin tightening appointment, the affected skin can be mildly inflamed, numb, or red. This is to be expected and will clear up naturally in several days. During your consultation, Dr. Anthony will talk with you about methods to care for the treated skin at home after your session, like keeping the skin protected from the sun and environmental damage. Many patients won't have noticeable improvements right after their session. Since the elastin and collagen stimulation and production is a slow process, you should have the total results of the procedure around several months after your session. However, your results should last a long time and enhance the general appearance and health of your skin. Some patients may require several sessions to achieve the most ideal outcome. At your initial consultation, Dr. Anthony can help you determine your personalized plan for treatment to meet your concerns and goals.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does ThermiRF cost?
The cost of a ThermiRF treatment will vary based on the area and the number of areas being treated. At our practice, we work with patients to provide payment options to help make treatments more affordable. During your consultation, a member of our team will be able to discuss all out-of-pocket costs with you.

How does ThermiRF work?
Heating the skin internally (to as high as 160 degrees) allows more skin shrinkage than is possible with heating from the outside (like with a laser or external radiofrequency). While the outside of the skin can burn at about 125 degrees (not high enough temperature to cause real skin shrinkage), the internal layer of the skin be heated to at least 160 degrees safely.

What is the difference between ThermiRF and other nonsurgical skin tightening procedures?
Compared to other external nonsurgical skin tightening procedures, ThermiRF has proven to be much more effective at achieving noticeable and lasting results. Since it is able to internally heat the skin, results tend to be more apparent than if the skin was to be heated externally. Not only are results caused by the direct heating effect, but also from the continuing production of collagen.

How long can results last?
Many patients see results beginning in about one month after their ThermiRF treatment. Your body keeps forming additional collagen for at least six months. This collagen formation is responsible for both tightening and the overall improvement in the skin and that is why patients treated with ThermiRF note improvements for at least six months after their treatment.

Is a ThermiRF procedure painful?
With local or twilight sedation, you should not experience any pain during your ThermiRF procedure. Following the treatment, there may be some bruising and/or swelling but this typically subsides within a week or so. If you experience any significant pain at the treatment site, you should contact our facility immediately.
