A septoplasty procedure is performed to correct and repair a septum that is deviated or crooked. Once corrected, patients will be able to breathe more easily and eliminate snoring, as well as other complications. At our San Francisco practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Anthony provides septoplasty procedures for his patients that have been diagnosed with a deviated septum that is obstructing their airway. There are many different factors that can cause a deviated septum including genetics, trauma or injury, or a birth defect. In some cases, a septoplasty is performed in conjunction with turbinate reduction surgery, which affects proper nasal air flow. A septoplasty can also be performed in combination with a rhinoplasty surgery to correct cosmetic nasal issues. Dr. Anthony treats the nose to restore both full functionality and create an aesthetically appealing facial feature. If you have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are experiencing unpleasant symptoms, contact our San Francisco facility today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Anthony.

"Dr. James Anthony is one of a kind. He is a kind-hearted, patient, compassionate surgeon who is truly gifted at what he does. He takes the time to listen to your needs and assess what you think is best. He and his entire staff walk you through every step of the process, so you can feel at ease, competent, and understanding of every facet of the journey. After having facial reconstructive work done last year from a different surgeon, I healed to have several imbalances. Dr. Anthony was able to rebalance this. His eye for detail and his craftsmanship as a surgeon are unparalleled. In addition, his following up, checking in, and availabilty to answer questions makes the healing process smooth. Dr. Anthony is a gem, just know you are in excellent hands with him and his crew. Each of his nurses, and his office coordinator, Ann, are superb. They have been working together for over a decade and are truly like family. They all have a sense of humor and an incredibly gentle way. Really can not say enough!"- H.P. / Yelp / Nov 14, 2018
"Kind doctor and great staff - Great doctor who made me feel incredibly comfortable. His office staff is also incredible. Ann was always available to speak with me and answered all of my questions in a timely and professional manner. Would definitely recommend."- R. / RealSelf / Oct 10, 2018
"I was referred to Dr. Anthony just over a year ago and it was one of the best referrals I've ever received. Dr. Anthony was warm, friendly and compassionate. I came to him with my issues which involved either liposuction or cool sculpting. He advised better results and a positive solution in my case with liposuction . He added a few innovative and very safe procedures that further enhanced his work. I loved that he had these ideas for what I would never have noticed and once he pointed them out the results were amazing. In addition, I had had a cervical fusion which left my neck skin twisted and sagging. He did a magnificent job straightening out the skin and leaving my neck and jaw line looking natural and 10 years younger. Kudos to Dr. Anthony and his staff for such a fine job."- M.K. / Yelp / Oct 03, 2018
Ideal candidates for a septoplasty surgery will have been diagnosed with a deviated or crooked septum, which could have been caused by one of many factors. In most cases, candidates will have begun to experience unpleasant symptoms including breathing issues, snoring, frequent nosebleeds, or loss of smell. They may also be desiring a more natural look to their nose as a deviated septum can sometimes cause the nose to appear crooked from an outside view that can be corrected with a combined septoplasty and rhinoplasty. A septoplasty can provide a long-term solution to the many problems caused by an abnormal septum allowing for improved functionality.
Typically an outpatient procedure, a septoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or a lighter form of sedation such as twilight sedation. No external incisions are needed as Dr. Anthony will lift and separate the tissue that covers the septum. He will be able to view the nasal structures as he reshapes the damaged structures. The entire surgical process can last anywhere from 1 – 2 hours to complete; however, this may vary if the septoplasty was combined with another procedure. After the structures are reshaped, the internal incisions will be stitched closed.
What to Expect
Following a septoplasty procedure, you may experience some slight pain, discomfort, swelling, and/or bruising. Typically, you will be able to return to your normal daily activities within a week but should avoid contact sports or activities that require extensive exercise. You will begin to experience improved breathing once the swelling subsides and results will continue to improve within the weeks and months following your procedure.
frequently asked questions
How much does a septoplasty procedure cost?
The price of a septoplasty procedure may vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of damage that needs correction. In some cases, a septoplasty may be eligible to be covered, at least in part, by insurance. Our practice also offers medical financing and payment plans to help make your procedure more affordable.
What is the difference between a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty?
A septoplasty by itself will not alter the outer appearance of the nose or fix the look of a crooked nose. It is purely a functional procedure to alleviate the unpleasant symptoms of a deviated or crooked septum. However, a rhinoplasty is exclusively a cosmetic procedure that can be performed in conjunction with a septoplasty to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the nose for straighter, more desirable results.
Why choose a plastic surgeon rather than an ENT to perform a septoplasty?
A plastic surgeon with distinct nose surgery experience will understand the importance of both function and aesthetics to provide you with your desired results. While an ENT only focuses on the functionality of the nose through septoplasty, plastic surgeons are specially trained to enhance the look and shape of the nose and alter it according to your goals — with the addition of rhinoplasty techniques. If you are wanting to simultaneously restore the appearance of your nose, a plastic surgeon will be able to use their artistic skills to reshape and change the facial feature.
Does should I seek surgical treatment for a deviated septum?
When the septum is severely deviated or crooked, it can cause sinusitis and breathing problems. If left untreated, the problems will not rectify themselves and will continue to be persistent. If a deviated septum is blocking one or both nostrils, you may want to consider seeking surgical treatment.
How long does it take to recover from a septoplasty?
Recovery times may vary from patient to patient. For example, if a rhinoplasty was done in combination with a septoplasty, the healing process will take longer. In most cases, it takes up to three weeks to fully recover from the surgery, but ideal results may take longer to be seen completely.
